Apple recently updated its iAd specifications to allow the display of sponsored posts directly in users’ news feeds in the Apple News app for the iPhone and iPad. The ads will appear in native-banner format and can link to articles in the News app. They will be set in the same default font as News articles and will have the same look, with a title, text excerpt and a small image. They will carry a small tag indicating they’re sponsored content. Apple’s move may reflect its ongoing competition with Facebook.

WhatsApp Scraps Fee Model

WhatsApp on Monday announced that it would drop the annual subscription fee and allow people to use the service for free. Company founder Jan Koum announced the move at the DLD Conference in Munich. While more than 900 million people worldwide use WhatsApp to stay in touch with family and friends, the $1-a-year subscription fee could be a barrier to further growth, he said. The service was free for the first year, then $1 per year after that. That business model wasn’t working because many WhatsApp users don’t have a debit or credit card.

Taken to Extremes, 'Right to Be Forgotten' Is Like Burning Virtual Books

The highest court in the EU last year ordered Google to allow individuals there to request that certain specific information not be reported in Google search engine results, citing their “right to be forgotten.” Since that court ruling, hundreds of thousands of EU residents have requested that Google eliminate certain information, and Google routinely has complied with many of those requests. However, France’s data protection authority earlier this year issued an order that appears to apply the right more broadly.
