Trump Puts Federal Cloud Investments on Front Burner

One of the few policies that President Donald Trump’s administration has carried over from his predecessor is that the federal government needs to make vast information technology performance upgrades — especially to cloud-based platforms. That should comfort vendors seeking business in the federal market at all levels of cloud offerings — hardware, software or services. Only 3 percent to 4 percent of federal IT is cloud-based, noted Chris Liddell, director of the American Technology Council.

White House Call for Set-Top Competition Strikes Nerves

The Obama administration last week called on the Federal Communications Commission to open the cable TV set-top box market to competition. Doing so would let companies create innovative, higher-quality and lower-cost products, the White House said. “Instead of spending nearly $1,000 over four years to lease a set of behind-the-times boxes, American families will have options to own a device for much less money that will integrate everything they want,” wrote Jason Furman and Jeffrey Zients.

White House Proposes $3B IT Update Fund

The Obama administration is seeking $3.1 billion for a fund to update federal IT resources that need to be replaced with more efficient systems. The fund would bolster the government’s annual spending on IT, which is set for a modest increase to $89.8 billion in the administration’s fiscal 2017 budget proposal. Upgrading older systems has been a concern for some time, but the administration chose to present the IT fund idea as part of a separate $19 billion cybersecurity initiative within the 2017 budget, perhaps to generate more support.

Privacy Advocates Blast Plan to Expand NSA Data Sharing

The Obama administration plans to increase the amount of private communications the National Security Agency can share with other government agencies without first adding privacy protections, according to a report published last week. The plan would ease restrictions on the amount of intercepted email and telephone intelligence the NSA gathers, including bulk collection of satellite communications, phone data between foreigners, and messages from overseas that U.S. allies provide.

China’s State Administration for Industry and Commerce on Tuesday launched the latest in a series of investigations against Microsoft for possible violations of the country’s antimonopoly law.
