Comcast Rolls the Dice With Xfinity Instant TV


Comcast has led the way in cable television ever since it acquired AT&T Broadband a decade ago. However, in recent years, new technologies — like IPTV and wireless TV from new competitors like AT&T and DirecTV Now — have been eating away at Comcast’s growth. That’s why Comcast not only has introduced Xfinity Mobile, which is its new wireless service, but also is getting ready to launch its own IPTV service, Xfinity Instant TV. I congratulate Comcast on this forward thinking, but there are no guarantees that IPTV will work for Comcast.

Quip Adds Serious Muscle


Salesforce has announced new integrations for Quip, the collaboration startup it acquired last summer for $582 million. Quip, which operates independently, also added new capabilities to its product’s existing feature set, which includes smart notifications, chat built into every document and spreadsheet, and a smart inbox. Quip lets users direct-message group members. Users can insert items such as code, images, cells and spreadsheets into a document. The new integrations Salesforce introduced are Quip Connect and the Quip Lightning Component.

CNN Taps Beme Talent to Cultivate Millennials


CNN has acquired Beme, the startup cofounded by YouTube sensation Casey Neistat, the companies announced Monday. CNN plans to launch a new branded subsidiary featuring timely and topical video content by the summer of 2017. It will be led by a team including the Beme cofounders, under a name as yet undecided, with CNN providing funding. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Neistat will provide the content expertise, and Beme cofounder Matt Hackett will lead digital innovation at the new company.

IBM Leaps Into Video Delivery


IBM on Tuesday revealed that it has acquired Clearleap, a company that develops cloud middleware for streaming video between endpoints. Clearleap’s scalable video platform can support millions of concurrent users in the event live broadcasting is in high demand. Customers of the company, which recently raised $40 million in funding, include the NFL, Time Warner Cable, Verizon and HBO. IBM intends to integrate Clearleap’s video platform into the IBM Cloud for enterprises looking to deliver user video experiences via the Web and mobile devices.

T-Mobile, which has tried unsuccessfully several times over the years to get acquired, is now in talks with Dish, according to press reports. The purchase price and possible cash-stock mix that could pay for the deal remain to be thrashed out. The two companies reportedly are planning a merger with Dish CEO Charlie Ergen to chair the new company and T-Mobile head John Legere (shown here) to be its CEO, but nothing has really been settled. The deal’s likely to go ahead, said Sam Rosen, a practice director at ABI Research.

Dropbox's Mailbox Lands on Mac Desktop


Dropbox, which acquired Mailbox last year, on Tuesday announced the availability of a Mac-only desktop beta version of the program. The beta is free, but you need a “betacoin” to download it. Betacoins are being emailed to existing users of the program, as well as people who sign up at the Mailbox website. Desktop Mailbox has a number of new features not found in its mobile doppelgangers. For example, there’s a draft mode that lets you work on a message across your devices.
