migration
So you want to migrate email from one mail server to Gmail?
So you're like us and have decided that there just isn't anything better than Gmail spam filtering and are wondering "why reinvent the wheel?" I mean, there's lots of reasons to switch to Gmail, but the spam filtering is just amazing. That means you're probably to the point of trying to figure out how to move your hundreds of email messages to the Gmail account you've setup.
Here's what we're doing. We've decided to use Google Mail through Google Apps. It allows us to point our domains MX records towards Google and collect mail for our domains at email addresses we've setup through Google. The cool part is, that the email addresses are actually at our-domain-name.com and we're able to check email at mail.our-domain-name.com using the well-known Gmail web interface.
But back to the point... Migrating mail from an email server to Gmail.
Currently, Google Apps offers a range of options to ease your migration from Microsoft Outlook and Exchange. However, this solution does not help the server admin who's not using Microsoft's products. We also located instructions for IMAP mail migration, however, it's only available for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, Cyrus IMAP Server, Courier-IMAP, and Dovecot applications. That brings us to our solution, a workaround if you will:
- Make sure the original email account is accessible via IMAP.
- Log into the newly created Gmail account and turn on IMAP access.
- Install an email client that supports IMAP. We used Apple Mail. A good windows alternative would be Thunderbird.
- Configure the mail client to access both email accounts via IMAP.
- Drag and drop email from the old email account to the new Gmail account.
- Wait for your mail to finish transferring.
That's it! A few easy steps and you're done.

Hilliard Davidson High School Theatre Website Moved and Redesigned
Hilliard Davidson High School Drama Boosters launched the Davidson Theatre website with a different web hosting firm several years ago. The site design was old and clunky in appearance and was lacking a couple features that they were looking for in a website - so, they were looking to re-design the site. proVanceTek worked with Davidson Theatre to design a site similar in color scheme and layout, but with a slightly more modern feel.
Before re-designing the site, proVanceTek successfully migrated the website SQL database to the proVanceTek web server preserving all data. After the site had successfully been migrated to its new home, proVanceTek proceeded to create a new Drupal theme for the website. The new theme was released earlier today and Davidson Theatre faculty are once again happy customers!

East Carolina University Up 'til Dawn Has Moved
Up 'til Dawn is a student-led, student-run program hosted by colleges and universities nation-wide. Up 'til Dawn unites faculty, staff, students, the surrounding community and sponsors in a goal to help the kids of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Currently over 75 college campuses participate in this program - East Carolina University is one of those colleges.
proVanceTek is proud to be hosting the East Carolina University Up 'til Dawn website and plans to provide further web development in the near future for online registration for events, online corporate donations, and much more!
The ECU Up 'til Dawn website was a recent acquisition from proVanceTek's owner's previous venture corporation. The website was designed from one of St. Jude's sanctioned templates to incorporate the East Carolina University branding banner across the top. The St. Jude HTML template was modified and ported over to a Wordpress website installation as a Wordpress theme.

Release of New Plain City Auction Website
After leaving his previous three year business venture this past fall, several of Robert's clients decided that they wanted to follow him to his new destination, proVanceTek. This was also the case with Plain City Auction.
December 2007 Plain City Auction migrated hosting services to proVanceTek after proVanceTek had completed porting the existing Plain City Auction XML based website to the Drupal content management system. proVanceTek created a couple custom Drupal features for Plain City Auction's use on their website.
proVanceTek continues to work on migrating the previous site content to the new website. Each page on the previous Plain City Auction site was hand-coded using XML which the site loaded using a proprietary rendering engine created by the website's previous web host. This content is in rather inconvenient format for any sort of automated migration. proVanceTek tried several automated migration tools available and had little success; the site is currently being migrated tediously by hand.
